Safe Parking in the District

So what is someone to do when traveling in D.C., searching for a place to park? Here are some helpful tips to ensure you find a safe parking spot in D.C. without dealing with a ticket or other parking penalties.

D.C., Maryland, and Virginia drivers all have one thing in common: they understand what gridlock means. In fact, the DMV region is notorious for its traffic and drivers are well aware of the hassle associated with sitting in congestion and traffic. While traffic is one thing drivers in the DMV know all too well, they also understand the difficulty associated with parking — specifically in D.C. While D.C. has one of the best public transportation systems in the DMV, people still prefer their cars. As a result, finding a parking spot nearby a specific location becomes incredibly tricky — if not impossible at times. So what is someone to do when traveling in D.C., searching for a place to park? Here are some helpful tips to ensure you find a safe parking spot in D.C. without dealing with a ticket or other parking penalties.

Always Check The Signs

There is a lot of importance placed on the signs located near parking spots. In fact, these signs can really be a guidepost towards helping you distinguish between an actual parking spot or one that will get you a ticket. Make sure to check signs for any special rush hour traffic rules as those are all too common around the D.C. area. These rush hour traffic signs will also alert you to specific times when your car will be at risk for getting towed or violating parking rules which could result in a fine or other penalties. In addition, pay close attention to areas that will require you to move your car as you’ll want to avoid those spots.

A Visitor Parking Pass

D.C. has a unique parking system where they provide a visitor parking pass that’ll allow visitors to the area the ability to park their car for longer than the usual two-hour stretch found at most parking spots. In fact, the Visitor Parking Program is so unique, the city has developed special zones that are then reserved for residential permits as well. It’s the responsibility of the Department of Public Works (DPW) to monitor cars — along with other automobiles — in the area to ensure they are all in compliance with D.C. registration rules and regulations.
