Getting an Inspection Certificate
Getting an inspection certificate is an important first step in the process. You need to visit a safety inspection station that has been authorized by the state to carry out this procedure. There are around 1,600 such facilities scattered throughout the state, so this should be relatively simple. These stations can inspect regular passenger cars, light trucks and SUVs weighing less than 10,000 pounds, and trailers that are 20 feet long or less as long as they don’t have air brakes.
In Case of Failure
It is entirely possible to fail a vehicle inspection test. However, this does not mean the end of the world. If you fail the test, you cannot be presented with the certificate. Problems that are identified must be fixed and then you can reapply for the certificate at a later date. You have a 30-day window to get the repairs that you need. The existing defects are going to be the only component of the second test unless there is a new flaw detected. The new flaw needs to be inspected and recommended for repair, so be prepared for that.
Required Fees
As per usual when dealing with the state’s Motor Vehicle Administration, there will be small fees involved with getting your vehicle properly inspected and registered. There is a fee for the first vehicle inspection test, although subsequent tests may not have a fee attached. That secondary cost can vary as well.
