Dealing with Moving Violations
Moving violations result in more points than non-moving violations. In fact, you typically shouldn’t be assessed points for violating parking regulations or a photo ticket; both situations could be based on leaving your car parked for too long and your meter expired. Two examples of moving violations are speeding and driving while distracted, both of which will penalize you with points that will stay on your record for two years.

The points system across the DMV (District, Maryland, and Virginia) region all work differently. A violation that counts for two points in Virginia could be worth much more than that within DC city limits. The tally depends on the town and county where you live, so think about where you got your driving license from before attempting to get rid of the points on your record.
How to Get Rid of Them
Although it might seem like a daunting task, you can get points removed from your driving record. If you earned your points in DC, then you can have them erased the same way, more or less. All you need to do is to complete an online defensive driving course offered by the DMV. However, this isn’t as easy or as straightforward as it sounds. There are other steps involved; first of all, you will need to contest the speeding ticket. You must explicitly request for the points to be wiped out. Your case will be examined, and upon approval, you can take the course.
